The different-colored light sabers in Star Wars are used to denote good and evil.

Lest anyone come away thinking of color theory as hooey, its mapping of the spectrum has more fact-based applications as well. Complements—those colors opposite one another on the Isaac Newton-devised color wheel oriented around the primaries of red, blue, and yellow—contrast with one another to create “color harmony,” a satisfying effect that livens up cinematography in often imperceptible ways. The orange–blue pairing gets the most play—see Mad Max: Fury Road (here), among countless others—for the inclusion of skin tones within the range of orange and the clean warm/cool polarity between them. That hasn’t stopped enterprising filmmakers from dabbling in green–red (as in God Told Me To, here) and yellow–purple (as in Black Panther, here). Knowing a color’s placement and opposite is the first step to composing a shot’s palette, from setting elements in a scene apart from one another to controlling where the audience’s eye is drawn. Color theory is just that—theoretical; and in many senses it is unproven, but it is an invaluable intellectual tool. Like everything else at the movies, it’s as real as we believe it to be.
